So Much Stuff I Can't Recall

Winging My Way Home (Almost)

I got bored playing Python tonight at the markfennell.com arcade and clicked on another of the games in the sidebar: Wings.

Fun, fun, fun.

You play an eagle soaring over Google Maps data. I chose Eugene, USA and, once I oriented myself (you start south of the Willamette on 127), started flying the route back to Blachly. Good memories.

Unfortunately the data runs out about 10 miles west of town. Or flood waters have consumed the coast range and covered everything in a robin's-egg-blue void (I really hope that's not what happened). Or maybe they've built that big blue dome they were talking about...

Still, fun little application (moreso once you realize what the <spacebar> does).

Enjoy!

It's a South Park World

Following the lead of the Bertrands and the Pendergrasses and the Schultzes, I stopped on by the South Park Studio and whipped up my own creation.

Behold!

And on those days when things are not going well (...or are they...), it's more like this.

Take That, Mavis Beacon

While it's not quite Typing of the Dead, Diseased Productions' Word Shoot: Spell Fast or Die is a spiffy little game that rewards fast -- and accurate -- spelling. Fun stuff, Maynard! Check it out.

(Hint: Typing detonate at the appropriate time kills all enemies on screen; guess what fullhealth does and how much easier the game would be for me if I even once remembered the l in health?)

Pocket-Sized Gat

Came across an interesting site the other day (circuitously via digg) that lets you make a nifty 8-page mini-booklet from a single sheet of paper (with clever folding and a scissors snip): PocketMod.

Thinking it'd be neat to make a pocket-sized "book," I made a template in InDesign and imported one of my Flashing in the Gutters stories to try it out. As an experiment it's not too shabby. There are some margin issues that require trimming with scissors after you print -- about a half inch at the bottom for me, your mileage may vary -- but it was a good learning experience.

Here's a PDF of my favorite of the three stories I contributed to FitG: Schrödinger’s Gat. (Click the "folding guide" button on the PocketMod page for instructions on how to create the booklet.)

Virtual Road Rage

A couple Christmases ago my brother and his family bought Phil the game Rush Hour Jr.. They also got me the limousine expansion pack. A fun game for the both of us.

Several weeks ago I discovered the game Gridlock (via digg, I believe). Same principle: get the designated block off the screen, moving the other blocks either up/down or left/right. I got through the first dozen or so levels quickly. Level 27 stumped me for days and days. Level 28 appears a poser, too.

If your commute's giving you nothing to complain about, give the game a try. If you're reading this on your web-enabled phone bumper-to-bumper on the 405, get off on Crenshaw and take a breather -- drive out to the coast, listen to the surf awhile -- before subjecting yourself to more frustration.

Celebrate the Season, Ralphie-Style

I'll admit I've never seen the movie A Christmas Story. One of my sisters bought it for us for Christmas a few years back, but to date Dina hasn't consented to let it be played in the home DVD player. Or a computer DVD drive. Or the car DVD player. I think were I take the DVD and watch it at a remote location on my PowerBook I would not be able to admit, publicly or privately, that I had watched the movie. Phil would find himself in the library doing "alternate study" were the film to be shown at school.

She does not like it, Sam I Am.

But from what I gather there's a boy, Ralphie, who wants a BB gun, but his folks are afraid he'll shoot his eye out. And there's some kind of mannequin leg lamp. I think there's a tongue-stuck-to-a-frozen-flagpole bit, too. Chevy Chase is not in the movie. (But we can't watch that film, either.)

Dina, as far as I know, would prefer that Ralphie get the gun and then shoot himself in the eye. Off-screen, of course, and not necessarily in the eye. A bang. The twang of a ricochet. A satisfying Ow! Which is why I think I'm safe in sending you to dontshootyoureyeout.com. A game where Ralphie-boy finds himself with a Red Wrangler Authentic Pump Action Saddle Carbine -- a knock-off of the Daisy Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Air Rifle Ralphie (according to the IMDB) wanted. Only holds ten shots, but you can get more ammo for good shooting (1,000 points). Pump the gun (hit spacebar) up to three times. More power means greater likelihood of a high score, but also increases the possibility of shooting yourself in the eye. (No fair turning your back to the BB. Any "accidental contact" loses you the points for that shot.)

My high score is in the 24,000 range. Two "accidents." How well can you do? (presuming, of course, that your goal isn't that satisfying Ow!)

via digg.com

This blog post has been read and approved by Dina, who recognizes its exaggerated nature and comedic intent. Were I to watch the movie off-site no harm would come to me; Phil would be doing independent study in the library because 94 minutes of instruction time is too precious to fritter away on a movie. Yes, fritter. I can "Bah Humbug!" too.

[just got a 75-bouncer, cycled through the million-point scoreboard several times; full load of ammo]

At the Intersection of Jay Leno and Oprah Winfrey ... and Motorcycles

Have you played Funny Farm?

It's a word association game where boxes are linked by common threads. For instance, you start out with a box titled "on the farm" and a bunch of boxes radiating out from it. Type in "cow" and you'll fill in one of those boxes, causing more boxes to appear. Type in "holy cow" and a new frame will open off to left. Click that frame and you'll find a box titled "religions" in the center and "holy cow" filled in on the right-hand border. Threads run from the two words and meet at an unfilled box. What's the connection? You figure it out (dots in boxes = letters in word).

I spent waaay too much time playing this yesterday, which is entirely Linda Gilmore's fault. (I did, however, fill in one entire frame -- Poker Stars -- by myself, no easy feat. Thank you wikipedia and Poker Babes!) Today's looking like a long day, too.

Which brings me to my current dilemma. What four-letter word (no, not that one) links Oprah, Jay, and motorcycles?

And what mysteries await in the north- and southwest corners?

(The game allows collaboration -- encourages it, even -- so if you want to share answers or just mooch from me and Linda and the couple others we're playing with, lemme know.)

Technically this isn't a Flash Game, but that's where I'm gonna file it.

I'm Flake #12268268

Here's a fun program for your Monday: Make-a-Flake, an online snowflake maker.

This is mine; not quite the paper doll effect I was shooting for, unless it's a bunch of E.T.s holding hands, but it has a nice sunburst in the middle.

And here's another. These are fun, aren't they. Kinda like kindergarten without that weird, paste-eating kid around. Oh, that kid was you? Sorry, 'bout that...

Enjoy!

[Here's one somebody else did: link. Can't tell if it's creepier than it is cool, or the other way 'round.]

Sunday Funday

I was going to hold this until tomorrow, but the only other subject that comes to mind for a post today involves sinus drip and I don't think anyone's all that interested in the subject. I know I'm tired of it.

So head on over to Pacxon: an online game that's half Pac-Man, half Qix. Instead of munching dots, you draw lines to claim gameboard territory. Fruits and power pellets appear occasionally to change the speed and vulnerability of the ghosts.

My current high-score: Level 19, 20969 points with 75% of gameboard in my possession.

(For added challenge/enjoyment, hop yourself up on antihistamines and stuff Kleenex in your nostrils -- Wooooo!)

Enjoy.
