The "Mostly" Full-Color Diner Cover

Last time I posted a link to the cover of Coach's Midnight Diner #2 the main illustration was only in black and white. Not so any longer.

Check out the amazing. (A few details to still be filled in, but still ... wow!)

Coach Culbertson has put a draft of the Issue #2 cover up on the "in progress" Midnight Diner site. Putting the "we so" in awesome there.

My short story "Hinky Jenks" is slated to appear in the second anthology. Start saving your pre-order money.

(If you've already got the Andy Jackson, but don't have Ish the First (my short "In R'lyeh, Jesus Walks" took an Author Choice award), it's only a Hamilton away...buy two.)

Looking for a Tax Write-Off?

Sure you could write a check to your church, put "baptismal dunk-tank" in the memo.

Or "extra-slidey pew polish." Or "sparkling Communion juice."

Or you could do something really cool.

ccPublishing NFP is a 501c3 nonprofit, publisher of the (once quarterly, now biannual-till-the-economy-turns-around) Relief Journal and Coach's Midnight Journal. Both publications feature Christian writing that "won't make you gag": literary fiction, non-fiction, and poetry in the Journal, good genre fiction in the Diner.

A week of Christmas deals starts up tomorrow, so you can write a check, get a subscription, a mug, or who-knows-what-else (probably not pew polish, though). Or you could just write a check and help out with the non-pledge drive. See the graphic below to see how much more needs to be raised to fund 2009's efforts.

Tote bag not included.

Hinky Preview

My short story "Hinky Jenks" is the back-of-the-book freebie in Relief Quarterly 2.1. Later this year the story will appear in Coach's Midnight Diner II (Eclectic Boogaloo?), but you can read it -- and a bunch of other fine fiction, poetry, and creative non-fic -- now in Relief.

Here's the intro:
Hinky Jenks, Madelyn Argent and me, we could’ve changed the world. Now I’m here alone with the envelope from Maddy’s father, and the priest with a click-clack heel on one of his shoes is walking the cellblock toward me.

Damn you, Jenks.

My death warrant expires in nine hours. No chance of a reprieve.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Kind of a film noir meets The Twilight Zone wrapped up in a Hitchcockian undershirt sort of thing. How many other stories make that sort of claim?

Get your copy (or a whole year's worth) today!

Amazonian

Coach's Midnight Diner, which includes my short story "In R'lyeh, Jesus Walks" snd begins shipping this weekend, is available for sale at Amazon. Twenty bucks. Spend a five spot on any of the half-dozen or more other things available at Amazon and basic shipping costs are waived.

It's also (still) available from the publisher for $15, but depending on where you're at, paying freight may wash out the savings.

Enjoy!

Coach Culbertson's Baadasssss Anthology

Last week on the Misfits blog I wrote about the importance of fans of a genre being in the best position to critique that genre. (If, for instance, you're not a fan of Fantasy, a harsh review from you on the Lord of the Rings trilogy would be of less use than an equally harsh review from a fan of the books -- clearly, that's a hypothetical example; who couldn't love the Rings trilogy?)

So it's a double encouragement to have seen Nickolaus Pacione's review of Coach's Midnight Diner. Pacione is a horror fan and has published several horror anthologies himself. When I can find the review posted publicly online I'll link to it, but here's a taste for now. (Depending on your upbringing, may include "dangerous words"; if this post's title offended you, beware...)
One hell of an anthology, Coach's Midnight Diner. ... This is for horror fans who think Peretti is just touching the iceburg. ... Got to hand it to the Coach. ... Part Lovecraftian Horror, Part Crime Noir, Part Weird Fiction, but an all out asskicking.

A must for fans of Lovecraft, Richard Matheson, Edgar Allan Poe, Algernon Blackwood, and Stephen King. ... They can't say Christian Fiction can't be dark and brutal! This thumbs their nose at them. Christian Fiction is going where dragons live.... FINALLY! An anthology with Christians who just write the damn story.

Enjoy this with a cup of coffee, a shot of whiskey, or even a case of beer (don't get too wasted because this thing has a message.) A Christian anthology for a crowd who listens to heavy metal music ... who wear a lot of black and listen to Goth Rock or Heavy Metal.

...This anthology packs a mean uppercut when it is written to turn the other cheek. Coach underestimated the intense nature of this one. ... The stigmas of Christian Anthologies are permanently shattered....

...They have a strong faith in God but they are total badasses about it. Christian or Non-Christian -- you'll enjoy this if you like Speculative Fiction.

--- Nickolaus A. Pacione
Editor, The TABLOID PURPOSES series.
Publisher, LAKE FOSSIL PRESS
Thanks for the high praise, Nickolaus.

Order your copy of Coach's Midnight Diner while they last.

Coach's Midnight Diner: The Pre-Sale

Coach's Midnight Diner, the genre anthology ("horror, mystery, crime, and paranormal goodness") that selected my short story "In R'lyeh, Jesus Walks" as the winner of its Jesus vs. Cthulhu contest has gone on pre-sale. It's slated to run $15, but you can save a buck by ordering now (hey, order more, save more -- well, sorta).

But, you ask, what's in this anthology? And what does the cover look like?

Worry not; I've got you covered.

But we like worrying. When we don't have something to worry about we start to panic.

Nevertheless...

Here's a run-down of all the stories. My favorite title has got to be "The Gift of the Magi If The Magi Had Been Big Idiots" (by Paul Luikart). I mean, based on that title alone, if you haven't just now gone back to that first paragraph and clicked on the "pre-sale" link, there's something wrong with you (maybe it's a tumor, my oh so worrisome friend). Here's that link again.

And here's the cover. Mmmmm ... that's some good cover.

Once again, in case after seeing the cover you want to order more, here's that pre-order link.

Having trouble reading the script font in the ad? Here's the info:

Good Blurb

The finishing touches are being put on Coach's Midnight Diner, the coming-soon fiction anthology I've got a short story in. Here's a working-blurb for my story, written by the magazine editor, Coach Culbertson:
In R'lyeh, Jesus Walks
Chris Mikesell
Winner of the Jesus Vs. Cthulhu Category

Take a romp through space and time as Jesus and Lucifer take a trip to the sunken city of R'lyeh by way of a comic book convention. Filled with humor and poignancy, Mikesell puts a fascinating twist on the Cthulhu mythos that will keep you laughing and thinking the whole way through.

I've seen draft quotes of the other stories and this is something you're going to want to get in on.

When details firm up on blurbs and CMD availability expect to hear more.
