Finding Yourself at Wal-Mart
Stopped by the Wal-Mart earlier this week to Jif and Little Debbie's oatmeal cookie sandwiches, wound up with Mr. Bean's Holiday on DVD ($5 bin) and several bags of Mike-Sell's caramel-flavored Puffcorn Delites ($1 each on the close-out rack).
Hadn't seen Mike-Sell's brand goodness at Wally's before. And since it was on close-out, I'm guessing I won't again....
Still, I am delicious.

Counting Blessings
School starts tomorrow, so before I get overwhelmed by the 100+ blessings making their way through my classroom every day, I thought I'd list some "why it's good to be a teacher" stuff I learned over the summer.
10% discount at Kwik Kar oil change and service shops.
Bonus freebies at Staples: while the rest of the world is limited to 2 or 3 free rulers, or 8-packs of pencils, or bottles of Elmer's glue, teachers get 25.
Verizon discount: still just a rumor, but I heard 30% off. Will have to check it out.

Do The Time Warp
(it's just a step to the left...)
We treated Dina to a celebratory dinner tonight in honor of her new gig at a local school district ("special projects": creating an alien-human hybrid capable of ace-ing standardized tests and telekenisis, or something). A Cheesecake Factory recently opened up near here, so that's where we went.
In the lobby was a sign advertising National Cheesecake Day and CF's 30th anniversary. This Wednesday, 7/30, the restaurant invites you to go back in time thirty years, price-wise at least.
Any slice of cheesecake at 1978 prices. That's a buck-fifty. Dine-in only, so get there early.
Now, if only I could recapture the video game skills I had as a nine-year-old...

Joys of (Almost) Teacherdom: Half Price Books
Made two stops at HPB sites today. The first was at their warehouse facility, where teachers can go and grab overstock books at no cost.
Yes. Free books.
I met up with a few folks from my teaching group and we all left with boxes of goodies. Rumor has it that it's sometimes an orderly affair, but today people were grabbing piles of books and stuffing them in their cardboard boxes, luggage, laundry baskets, etc. I at least tried to select things that were of some interest. Wound up with a lot of books on writing, some anthologies, and a bit of miscellanea. Also picked up some cassette tapes: Jackson Browne, Jim Croce, The Call, Beach Boys, Ennio Morricone. My classroom will be rockin' hard, you betcha.
I also went down to the main HPB store in Dallas. Picked up Stephen King's Secret Windows, a companion book to On Writing. Hadn't heard of it before, so cool beans for me. At the register I asked if student teachers qualified for the 10% teacher discount.
They said, "Why not?"
I said, "Yee-haw!"
OK, I didn't say it out loud, but it was implied when I said, "Thanks." The discount covers sales tax and a bit more. Yee-haw, indeed.
I'm sure not every day of being a teacher will go as smoothly, but I'll takes what I can gets while I can gets it.

Cuepons or Coopins?
Here’s what I do a lot of times. I’ll be shopping online and then just before I finish the checkout procedure I remember to search for coupon codes that might apply to my purchase. OK, that’s actually what I do a lot of times after I've completed the checkout procedure. And that’s about five minutes before I think to comparison shop, and invariably I find some way to save money on what I just bought.
Grrrrrrr.
Coupon Chief is a site that takes a lot of the hassle out of finding online coupons. And since they index coupons for over 1,000 sites—like these Amazon coupons—so it’s relatively simple to compare and find who has a great deal for what you’re looking for.
Check ‘em out.

Darn Good Borders Coupons
Yeah yeah yeah, light on the content today. Not making money at your expense this time, plus I'll buy you a cup of coffee.
Okay, not so much buy you a cup of coffee, as allow you to acquire one at no cost above and beyond the first (more expensive or equally priced) cup you buy. That's right, it's a two-fer deal at Borders. (Some restrictions apply, read the fine print.)
Also this week they've got a 30%-off-any-item (with $10 purchase and even more restrictions than the two-fer) deal. But hey, it's 30% off (almost) any item, boxed-set CDs/DVDs/books (apparently) included. Those chocolate truffles at the check-out counter, too (provided you buy $10 worth).
Enjoy! (Use the coupon(s)? Share what you got in the comments, thanks!)

Getting People This Year?
Just checked what it'll cost to file our taxes online with the company we've used for the last few years. Almost $60. Tax-deductible next year, I believe, but still...
My sister Julia, a CPA, pointed me in the direction of irs.gov and their FreeFile program. Turns out if your AGI (automated gyroscope inverter?) is under $52,000 there are places that will prepare and e-file your federal return at no charge to you.
Will they sell your personal info? They say they won't.
On the list of companies providing the service is H&R Block, an outfit that sounds vaguely familiar (most don't). So we're looking at them this time around. State filing costs, but it's less than what the other company is charging.
If you're interested in e-filing this year, give the list a look. Try the FreeFile Wizard (not actual warlock) to see which outfits are available based on your AGI (aqueous gluten incubator? albatross galoshes investment?) and a few other factors. The money you save might be your own.
(This is not an ad. I have no expectation of remuneration or a free T-shirt. Consult a Certified Public Accountant before accepting advice from people you don't know on the Internet. Remuneration and free T-shirts will gladly not be refused should they be offered.)

NuTunes
Stopped by StVdP earlier in the week and picked up a couple CDs. One, Peter Gabriel's Us, I've been hunting for a while. The other, a John Debney/Royal Scottish National Orchestra recording of Bernard Herrmann's score for The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, was an unexpected treat. (They also had six or eight soundtracks by Danny Elfman, but I hadn't seen the movies, so I passed.)
If you're looking for Christian music at near-thrift store prices, check out some of the deals at Christian Discs' $3.99 (or less) sale. Some of my favorites:
Can't vouch for, but wouldn't be surprised to find it excellent:
Phil Keaggy: Cinemascapes
In the event that Sandi Patti/y is more your style:
Artist of My Soul, All the Best, Find it on the Wings
See something I missed in the almost 300 CDs on sale? Give me an earful in the comments (and don't miss the other almost-300 CDs in the $6.99 Super Sale).

- Sixpence None the Richer: self-titled
though I'm partial to their Divine Discontent - Chasing Furies: With Abandon
- Lost Dogs: Best of
(pre-Gift Horse/not nearly enough from Green Room Serenade) - The Choir: Flap Your Wings
- Echoing Green: Supernova
For when you're feeling Techno-y. - Various Artists: Roaring Lambs
With everyone from Jars of Clay to Over the Rhine to Steve Taylor to Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Charlie Peacock. Good stuff, Maynard. - Charlie Peacock: Strangelanguage
- Havalina: Space Love and Bullfighting
Quirky, but the organ on "You've Got Me Cryin" is worth $4 all on its own.
