Open House
It was Open House night at Phil's school. Spent about 45 minutes getting the tour of his classroom and the things he's been doing.
Such as...
Also got to see the special classrooms devoted to Art, Science, Music, as well as the Library and Gym. Nothing was going in any of those rooms, but it was nice to know that they're there.

Phil: Boy of Science
Tonight was the Science Fair at Phil's elementary school. Phil's entry dealt with what happens when you make significant modifications to one of his LEGO toys. It was his first time to participate in a science fair and he's happy with his participant's ribbon.
Here's a pic of the happy scientist.
In conjuction with the Science Fair, the school also had math and science activities for the kids to play. Among other things, Phil estimated area with Ms. Spencer, played a predictions game with Mrs. Wheeler (his teacher), and helped the blue eyes catch up with the browns (OK, not quite).
Next year we'll see if they lift the ban on explosives and Phil can enter his rocket engine-modified LEGO car....

House of Crackers
Graham crackers, that is.
Phil made this gingerbread-esque house in his after-school program this afternoon.
Mmmmm ... house <drool>

Star Student
Phil was one of four second graders named Star Student this week at his elementary school. This means he was chosen by his teacher to represent his class (there are four second grade classes, each appointed a student). Phil got to appear in the TV announcements (yes, his school delivers their daily announcements via television -- high tech!) and say his name and which classroom he's from.
Way to go, Phil!

The Things Kids Learn In School These Days
Philip came home from school the other day with the ability to produce armpit farts. Since then he's practiced every day and is approaching mastery level.
Don't know if this bodes well for him learning a musical instrument or not. Since the only one that plays using the inside part of the arm is the bagpipe we may be in trouble either way.
He's doing well in his actual classwork, too.

Where I Been?
Been going through Internet withdrawl, that's for sure.
It'll be next weekend before the Internet gets hooked up at our apartment and until yesterday I was without it at school, too. (Blogger is blocked on the district network, so I'm posting this from the Richardson Library.) Were it not for the library and Staples and Corner Bakery I'd be wardriving the suburbs like a wifi junkie jonesing for a fix.
The first three days of school felt like three weeks. Several of the teachers at TJ agree this feels like a very long week. Today felt like a regular day, though; so perhaps things are improving. If tomorrow feels like half a day I could be in trouble. (I had a meeting with my fellow Texas Teaching Fellows fellows on Tuesday; wonderful to be back with the gang again.)
Phil's adjusting to his new school and being a second grader. He finds the 20 minutes of free-reading homework oh-so-onerous. Poor kid. He doesn't appreciate naps, either.
In case you missed it, I had another short in the Door Insider this week: Mormon Missionary Team Faces Blood Doping Charges.
And I'll have some sort of a presence at the Misfits blog tomorrow, so be sure to check that out, too.
