Free Books
Or at least book-like audio recordings. Or an audio recording based on a movie based on a book and another dramatized reading of a book. maybe a short story, I don't know. Hey, they're free.
Today's entry over at The Short of It (a short-story-related blog) has a link to the Thrilling Detective 'zine website where you can get a recording of a Maltese Falcon radio broadcast starring Bogart & Company. (click "listen" on the lurid Maltese Falcon book cover, then save the file to your hard-drive)
And for those of you with iTunes (whether or not you have an iPod, you can still download and listen to iTunes files from your PC/Mac), there's a free dramatized reading of Louis L'Amour's "Merrano of the Dry Country." (Scroll down to the bottom of the initial music store and see the "free downloads" box on the right. Apple updates their "free downloads" every Tuesday; this is the first audiobook I've noticed there. Nab it and maybe they'll give them away more often.)

4 Snarky Remarks:
I'd post a comment on your writing blog if you had them enabled (hint, hint :) because that's what interests me the most: seeing how other writers sort through their projects. I'm facing a re-write of my own in the near future, though not of my nano. THAT I hope to have first draft done of in the next week though. Wish me luck!

What can I say, I'm a coward. I've thought about turning the comments on, but right now I don't want to solicit criticism or suggestions on the book - or say "only post nice things." I can admit to being fragile, but I'd rather not be shallow.
The blog is mostly there to keep public failure in the forefront of my mind (like telling people I was nano-ing kept me plugging away toward the 50K words).
If you want to discuss things, you can shoot me an email: mikesell-at-casco-dot-net (replace the -at- with an "@" and the -dot- with a "." then delete the quotation marks).
I'll give private e-mail a try and we'll see how it goes. If it goes well, maybe I'll give comments on over at the writing blog a test run. (I'm considering joining Pat's "carnival" next month - If I do, I'll turn comments on at least for that post.)

Hey Chris, It's not that big a deal. I didn't have anything in particular to say, and I'm certainly in no position to criticize or give valuable input based on only the bits you share publicly. Which is as it should be, and I'm not at all begging you to show more. If I have anything to say, I'll just shoot a comment in over here, as I did this time, if that's okay. Happy writing! Valerie
