Larry Norman: Home at Last
Came across this today (via my sister, Julia, who got the word via my other sister, Sarah). Larry Norman, the forever white-haired grandpappy of Christian Rock, has ceased visiting this planet. In my teens, I had the joy of attending several of his concerts in the S.F. Bay Area (Great America and Wolfgang's). Great, great shows.
Although Larry's gone he lives on through his music (91 songs--five and a half hours--on my iPod, 15 CDs in my collection, and several LPs I need to rip someday), and that of the dozen-plus artists he brought to the public's attention in the 70s and 80s (not to mention the countless artists he inspired).
There is an announcement from his brother, Charles, on Larrynorman.com. Read the whole thing, but my favorite part from Larry's goodbye is:
Until we meet in the Island in the Sky, God bless, Larry.

I feel like a prize in a box of cracker jacks with God's hand reaching down to pick me up.A great image.

Fink
Russell Fink, that is.
Not sure how I missed out on the announcement, but I managed to miss getting a review copy of Mike Snyder's book, My Name Is Russell Fink. Won't let that stop me from mentioning Mike and his book here, though.
Linda Gilmore's got your basic CFBA info. Mich Pendergrass has a multi-part interview: 1, 2, 3.
I met Mike at a writer's conference a few years back, and we keep in touch via our regularly irregular (needs more bran, I guess) crit group, The Misfits. As decent a guy as you'd ever want to try to break into a deserted gym with. He and I have short stories running in The Best of Relief, Vol. 1 (along with a third Misfit, Angie Poole, and other conference goers/gym caper-ists, Christopher Fisher and David Long).
Check 'em out.

5 Days, 5 Countries
After quite a drought, five countries showed up for the first time in my blog stats last week: Greenland, Sudan, Faroe Islands, Brunei, and Antigua & Barbuda. This brings the country count up to 126.

"It's such a fine line between stupid ... and clever."
--David St. Hubbins, This Is Spinal Tap
Case in point: Puppy Bowl IV on Animal Planet. During the Super Bowl halftime recap (and quite a bit of Tom Petty) we hopped back and forth to watch the puppies.
Fun stuff, Maynard.
