Bargain Hunting
Phil and I stopped by St. Vinnie's this afternoon and blew $5 and change on books. Here's what we scored:
- Animalia by Graeme Base
Kids' books were only a quarter, so this was an excellent find. Great condition. Great pictures. Great fun. - The Complete Stories by Flannery O'Connor
For a buck, this is as good a deal as the animal book. I loves me some Flannery O. - 24 Hours in Cyberspace by Rick Smolan
Hardcovers run $2 at St. Vin's, but in addition to being a fabulous coffeetable book, this still had its CD-ROM unmolested inside the back cover. It's also autographed by the author (if I pretend my name's Elisabeth, it's almost as if I've met the author personally). Another great deal. - Deadlock by James Scott Bell
Okay, this one was a bit of a gamble: a legal thriller from a Christian publishing house (Zondervan). For a buck, I'm not really out anything if it doesn't meet expectations - but I'll still give it an optimistic shot. I hope to be pleasantly surprised. - The Mac Is Not a Typewriter by Robin Williams
This is a classic (mine's a first edition, unlike the Amazon offering). An heirloom-quality book for only a buck; where's Antiques Roadshow to tell me how much I should have paid?

I'm in Chicago and my oldest daughter and I sort of got lost looking for a movie theater (long story), but when we found the theater,we also found a bookstore nearby. It's a used bookstore called ... Books. It's amazing -- tiny, but absolutely full of canyons and cul de sacs of books. I found a paperback of Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson, and The Club Dumas and spent less than $10 (not as good a bargain as yours, but the store itself was an adventure). If I wasn't on a budget, I could have spent much, much more ...
