The Good Stuff at St. Vincent de Paul
Stopped by the StVdP store on Division in Eugene yesterday and walked away with a few plums, a couple figs, and a mango.

The figs (these aren't necessarily bad, but they may wind up having more fiber than flavor):

- Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott; slightly water damaged, but only a buck.
- Othersyde by J. Michael Straczynski; hardcover, $2. Joe's stuff shows up at the thrifts so rarely that I swooped on this one.
- Magic Terror by Peter Straub; hardcover, $2. This is the book I was reaching for when I saw Straczynski's Othersyde; seven spooky stories -- Ooooooooooo.
- The Empress File by John Sandford; paperback, $1.
The figs (these aren't necessarily bad, but they may wind up having more fiber than flavor):
- Writing the Modern Mystery by Barbara Norville; paperback, $1. A whodunit how-to; this one and the Lamott came with free underlining by previous owners -- Bonus Score!
- No Uncertain Terms by Mark & Diane Dittrick; a small lexicon "that tells you (in no uncertain terms [get it?!]) why a meteoroid is not a meteor or a meteorite, a swamp is not a bog, and an elk is sometimes a moose...." Only freaky word geeks would spend a dollar on it (it's also available from Amazon resellers for a nickel ... plus shipping) -- count me in.
- The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Live in Concert by Douglas Adams; The man himself ... on stage ... reading ... out loud!
How can you put a price on that?
Can you catch a falling star without burning your hand? Can you put the sky in your mouth? Can you say to an earthquake...'hey, hold still for a second?' <slaps tush> No!
Okay, St. Vincent's did: $3. What a bargain for me.

As a matter of fact, you CAN put the sky in your mouth. But be warned, if you try to do it while gliding full-throttle in a bass boat, you will get a mouthful of mosquitoes :-)
